My memories of Barbara.

I remember Barbara as always being a kind, chatty and cheerful person. We had lovely holidays with her and Grandad in Moretonhampstead as children. Duncan and I were always keen to walk the dogs with Grandad. Barbara used to have to try and make him wait so we could come to (he went out so early we weren’t awake in time) and always had a nice breakfast ready for us afterwards. Moving to Devon gave us the chance to really get to know Grandad and Barbara as we saw them much more often than the odd holiday; popping in after East Devon Music Centre on a Friday, Carol Services at Topsham Church. They used to like their pub lunches and introduced our family to lots of good Devon pubs. I have never forgotten how kind Grandad and Barbara were to our Nannie when she had terminal cancer and was living with us. They used to come most weeks and take her out for a pub lunch and a drive in the country or just have a cuppa and a chat. Grandad being a gent would never let her pay. No-one asked them to do that, they just wanted to help, and the company and trip out did Nannie so much good. Barbara’s zest and talent for gardening has also inspired me. Her garden in Parkfield Road was lovely, amazing what she could turn a thin strip of grass into! She also helped Mum in creating her garden in Cullompton. She gave her a camelia for Christmas, which is still growing today, now a mature and beautiful shrub. I have remembered her advice about planting them when planting my own in my first garden here in Burnopfield. When they moved to the bungalow she had the space to do much more and I remember often looking round her garden with her whilst she enjoyed telling me about how things were growing, and the plans she had. Rest in peace Barbara, I hope with Grandad by your side. Lots of love, Becky West (nee Guest)
